Heavy barrage of tobacco industry on political sector

Heavy barrage of tobacco industry on political sector

The tobacco industry incessantly attempts to intervene in the Bundestag debate on smoking restrictions. At 6 p.m. today Philip Morris is inviting parliamentarians from the Bundestag to an event in the China Club Berlin (Behrenstr. 72, Pariser Platz). The subject of the evening is, "Must the tobacco products sector be more extensively regulated?" Following the main event there will be a dinner in the club.

Johannes Spatz, spokesperson for Forum Rauchfrei, is calling upon members of the Bundestag to stay away from this event. In past years the tobacco industry has repeatedly endeavoured to functionalize the political sector for its purposes. It tries to create a positive climate for its business by means of party contributions, large advertisements in party newspapers, involvement of politicians at donation presentations, awarding of prizes or acceptance of honorary patronage appointments. In this year alone it has carried out a whole series of events in order to strengthen its contacts with the political sector.

If you look at www.forum-rauchfrei.de. you will find numerous press releases and documents relevant to this issue. Under "Dokumentationen, Literaturempfehlungen" (documentation, recommended literature) you can also look up the many initiatives of Philip Morris under "Gegen Sponsoring durch Tabakindustrie" (against sponsoring by the tobacco industry).
